What to Look for in an Online English Tutor (and How to Find One Who Fits)

With so many tutors a click away, here is how to tell who will actually move your English forward — and what to quietly ignore.
Booking your first online English lesson is easy. Booking the right one is harder. With so many tutors a click away, how do you tell who'll actually move your English forward? Here's what matters — and what to quietly ignore.
1. A real conversation, not a lecture
The whole point of a tutor is that they respond to you. A good lesson is mostly you talking, with the teacher correcting, nudging and stretching you. If you're just listening to someone explain grammar, an app could do that for free. Look for one-to-one lessons where you're the one doing the work.
2. Teachers who are actually vetted
"Native speaker" alone isn't a qualification — being able to speak a language and being able to teach it are different skills. The best platforms check their teachers properly: experience, qualifications, and a real profile you can read before you book. You should never be booking a stranger blind.
3. The right teacher for your goal
Prepping for IELTS or TOEFL is a completely different job from building confidence for a holiday or a job interview. Someone who's brilliant at exam strategy may not be who you want for casual conversation, and vice versa. Be able to filter by what you actually need — exam prep, business English, pronunciation, or just talking.
4. Flexibility that fits a real life
Motivation dies when scheduling is a chore. You want to see a teacher's actual availability, book around your week, and reschedule without a fight. Learning sticks when it fits your life, not when you have to rearrange your life around it.
5. You should be able to start small
You shouldn't have to commit to a 40-lesson package to find out whether a teacher suits you. The ability to book a single lesson, try someone, and switch if it's not a fit is a sign a platform trusts its own teachers.
How Studimonkey is built around this
We built Studimonkey around exactly these things: every teacher is vetted (native and certified), every lesson is one-to-one, and you can filter by goal — conversation, IELTS, TOEFL and more — then book around your own schedule, one lesson at a time. You read the profile, pick the person, and start. The teacher who's got your back is one search away.
